David Gryn artist

David Gryn was born into a Jewish family in New York, USA in 1963 but has lived in London since he was a child; his father, Rabbi Hugo Gryn (1930-1996), served as assistant rabbi and later as senior rabbi at West London Synagogue from 1964–96. Gryn originally trained as a painter, many ofwhose works are inspired by his own upbringing, as well as his father’s experience as a Holocaust survivor. He now works as a curator with digital and sound art.

Biography

Artist and curator David Gryn was born into a Jewish family in New York, USA in 1963 but has lived in London since he was a child; his father, Rabbi Hugo Gryn (1930-1996), served as assistant rabbi and later as senior rabbi at the West London Synagogue from 1964–96. Gryn trained as a painter, studying at St Martin’s School of Art in London from 1983–6. Many of his works are inspired by his own upbringing, as well as his father’s experience as a Holocaust survivor. He has participated in group shows including the Ben Uri Open Exhibition in 1985 and three years later, in 1988, he held a joint exhibition at Ben Uri with artist, Laura Godfrey-Isaacs. In 1986 he held a solo exhibition at the Osborne Gallery in London. In 1990 Gryn received a painting commission from The Ivy, a renowned restaurant in London's West End, in the company of noted British artists such as Patrick Caulfield.

In 2001, Gryn founded Artprojx, a philanthropic company aiming to provide a space for digital and video artists and potential investors and galleries looking to support their work, going on to establish Daata Editions, of which he is currently Director, a platform that allows viewers to download specially-commissioned digital art onto their own personal devices. Gryn subsequently developed Daata Fair to enable galleries to utilise his website platform to show and sell their artists' videos. Daata now works with over 70 international galleries and has over 600 artworks. From 2010 to 2017 Gryn was the Curator of Film and Sound at Art Basel Miami. Gryn has worked on projects with renowned international artists such as Mark Wallinger, William Eggleston, Christian Marclay and Grace Ndiritu.

David Gryn currently lives and works in London. He is married to the painter, Jane Bustin. In the Uk public domain his work is represented in the Ben Uri Collection.
