Biography

Artist Rivka Mayer was born into a Jewish family in Canakkale, Turkey (now Türkiye) in 1938 and immigrated to Israel in 1948, the year of the founding of the new State, where she studied at the Bezalel School of Art in Jerusalem. From 1968-73 she was in charge of the art department at the Orde Wingate Youth Village in Haifa, a safe haven for at risk and immigrant children, later moving to England and continuing her art studies in London at St Martin's School of Art. While in London in 1975 she exhibited with Ben Uri, holding her solo show: First London Exhibition of Collages by Rivka Mayer featuring her floral and landscape-inspired collages made from discarded material, including views in her native Turkey. German Jewish émigré artist Lottie Reizenstein, who also showed regularly with Ben Uri, singled out Mayer’s delicate silk-on-silk works in a review in the AJR Information (August 1975) while I.M Saul described her collages on the invitation card for the exhibition as: 'A distinct yearning to the sophisticated naivety of the Orient. A spontaneous harmony where shape, colour and blank spaces inter-act to create a delicate balance between reality and dream' (Ben Uri archives, 1975).

Rivka Mayer died in Israel in 1990. Her work is represented in the UK public domain in the Ben Uri Collection.
